According to Cooper and her colleagues, (Cooper et al., 1997), “motherese” is a term that has been long used to describe the exaggerations that are typically found in mother’s speech to their infants and young children. As mentioned earlier, research has shown that infants prefer infant-directed speech such as motherese to adult-directed speech. Cooper and colleagues experimented with 1 and 4 month olds at their preferences for maternal infant-directed speech. Their results showed that infant’s attention to infant-directed speech depended on factors such as speaker-general and speaker-specific characteristics. Motherese speech is attempted by elevating the pitch, or fundamental frequency, of the voice, expanding pitch range and variability, extending their pitch excursions over time, and repeating themselves.
